We have the expertise that you need
Employment law is a highly specialized area of law. It requires knowledge of dozens of state and Federal laws, rules and regulations which overlap and conflict, each with its own deadlines, procedures, and remedies. Selecting one remedy can foreclose others, determine the court that will hear your case, impact the applicable rules of evidence, impose limits on gathering evidence, and influence the time and expense involved. There are numerous traps for the unwary, any one of which could destroy your case. Anyone seeking employment counsel should verify that the attorney has the knowledge and experience to navigate them through all the mine fields.
Only a small percentage of Florida Lawyers regularly practice employment law
Of the over 80,000 licensed attorneys in Florida, only about 2500 are members of the Labor and Employment Section of the Florida Bar, only 200 who regularly practice plaintiff's employment litigation, and less than 100 who are who are members of the National Employment Law Association of Florida .
Beware free consultations
Employment claims can resemble personal injury law on the surface, so some lawyers feel they can dabble in the area as though it was a natural extension of their personal injury practice. In a typical personal injury case, the attorney has a rough idea from pre-screening that a possible client has a valid case before the client first walks into the office. That’s why personal injury lawyers generally give free initial consultations.
Employment lawyers on the other hand have to screen dozens of possible inquiries and cases just to find one meritorious case. If employment lawyers offered free consultations they would quickly go broke since there wouldn’t be enough time left to work on actual cases. That’s why it’s customary for experienced employment lawyers to charge a consultation fee.
If you are offered a free consultation, beware, as it may mean that the lawyer you are consulting lacks a lot of experience. Of course, there are some very qualified employment attorneys who will waive their consultation fee from time to time.
